Bunyan's Bedford

John Bunyan lived during the 17th century. Born in 1668, he lived his early years in Elstow. Bedford at that time only had a population of two thousand. When Bunyan was twenty seven he moved to Bedford, buying a house in St Cuthbert's Street. It was in Bedford that Bunyan discovered the answer he was looking for to help find his way in life. He joined the congregation of St John's Church.

In Bunyan's life as a preacher he wrote over forty books, including the well known Pilgrim's Progress. He travelled in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Surrey and London, teaching and preaching his gospel.

Bunyan died in August, 1688 after contracting pneumonia while on a visit to London. He is buried in a vault in Bunhill Fields, City Road, London.
